Different Laser Correction Procedures

LASIK This is a surgical technique in which the excimer laser is used under the surface of the cornea.  The surface cells are saved by hinging them to one side.  The excimer laser then reshapes the underlying corneal tissue.  The surface cells are then returned to their original position.  This procedure is used to treat nearsightedness, farsightedness, and astigmatism.  In general, LASIK is associated with more rapid visual recovery and is relatively comfortable.  Typically, both eyes are done on the same day.

PRKThis is a laser procedure used to treat nearsightedness, farsightedness, and astigmatism.  This procedure is done completely on the surface of the cornea and requires no incisions.  The surgeon starts by removing a surface layer of cells called the epithelium (these cells naturally regenerate themselves every few days).  The excimer laser, preprogrammed by the computer, is then gently applied to the surface of the cornea to reshape the surface curvature  to the proper refraction.  This procedure is virtually painless and takes under ten minutes.  The initial layer of cells removed is so thin that the structural integrity of the cornea is maintained throughout and recovery is speedy.
